Insulating materials are key components in electrical engineering used to prevent current flow. Their resistivity is typically greater . Their main functions include isolating live conductors, providing mechanical support, dissipating heat, and preventing moisture, and they are widely used in power equipment, electronic circuits, and new energy fields. Here is a comprehensive introduction to insulating materials:
1. Definition and Basic Characteristics
Insulating materials are also known as dielectrics, referring to substances that do not conduct electricity or conduct electricity very little under allowable voltages. They must have high insulation resistance, heat resistance, moisture resistance, and certain mechanical strength. The core performance indicators include:
Breakdown strength: The critical field strength at which the material is broken down by an electric field (unit: kV/mm), such as for solid insulating materials, it is usually 10-50 kV/mm³6.
Heat resistance grade: Divided into seven levels: Y, A, E, B, F, H, C, corresponding to the limit working temperature ranging from 90°C to over 180°C (such as polyimide and ceramics belong to H and C grades) 15.
Insulation resistance: Usually up to the megohm level, significantly affected by temperature and humidity 1.
Aging mechanism: Includes electrical aging (local discharge), thermal aging (high-temperature oxidation), and environmental aging (ultraviolet, ozone, etc.) 16.
2. Classification and Typical Materials
Insulating materials are classified into three types based on their form:
Gas insulating materials: Such as air and sulfur hexafluoride , the latter due to its high insulation and arc-extinguishing capabilities is used in high-voltage electrical equipment, but note the toxicity of its decomposition products 13.
Liquid insulating materials: Including mineral oil (transformer oil), synthetic esters, etc., used for heat dissipation and insulation in transformers, need to prevent oxidation and contamination 16.
Solid insulating materials: The largest proportion (over 85%), common types include:
High-molecular materials: Such as epoxy resin, silicone rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), suitable for motors, cables, etc. 35.
Inorganic materials: Such as mica, ceramics, glass, etc., high-temperature-resistant materials (C grade) 16.
Composite materials: Such as aramid fiber-reinforced laminated products, used in high-temperature motors or PCB substrates

1.How to get a quote?
Kindly send us the drawing(2D, 3D) of your product, and including details as below:
